Flavored E-Cigarettes May Worsen Asthma: Study

Beware e-cigarette smokers! A new study has revealed that smoking flavored e-cigarettes could make your body vulnerable to allergic airways disease such as asthma. In recent years, e-cigarettes have become very popular especially among youngsters in countries like the United States of America. According to an estimate, 9 percent of 18-24 year age group in the US are active e-cigarette users. The student by University of Technology Sydney (UTS), University of Vermont, USA and the Woolcock Institute of Medical Research, Australia, show that use of flavored e-cigarettes, with and even without nicotine, may change how airways function and some flavors may worsen the severity of diseases. UTS researcher and lead author of the study, which was published in Scientific Reports, Dr David Chapman, said this was the first study to measure the effects of flavored e-cigarettes on allergic airways disease with and without nicotine. Researchers said that some flavored e-cigarettes can worsen disease severity even in the absence of nicotine.

For the survey, researchers picked up more than 30,000 people randomly from the general population. They studied their smoking behaviors, use of e-cigarettes and respiratory symptoms. Besides, they tested the commonly sold e-cigarette liquids. They found that the substance used in these e-cigarettes liquids could be capable of causing allergy symptoms and asthma in e-cigarettes users. They found that for every liquid they tested, it contained one substance each having health risk factor.

Notably, despite the suggestion that e-cigarettes are a healthier alternative to tobacco cigarettes, there is no evidence available on the effect of e-cigarettes on the functioning of the lung in both animal and human studies. E-cigarettes are an electronic device which is used to inhale nicotine (liquid form) and various kinds of flavorings. The device contains a cartridge full of nicotine/flavored nicotine, heating circuit, battery to heat the device that turns the liquid into a vapor, enabling one to inhale vaporized nicotine. Many e-cigarettes are available in both disposable and rechargeable form.
